Jotun interior vs exterior paint: which one for which wall

Walk into any paint shop and the first question you hear is about colour. The more important question comes first: where is the paint going? Jotun makes separate products for inside walls, outside walls, wood and metal, and the first coat on bare plaster. Use the wrong one and even a beautiful colour can fade, peel or mark within a season. This guide explains the four main types in plain language.

Why inside and outside paint are different

Paint on an outside wall has a hard life. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi it faces strong summer sun, heavy monsoon rain, dust and big swings in temperature. Outside paint is made to hold its colour in sunlight, shed water and stay flexible as the wall heats and cools.

Paint inside has a different job. It gets touched, leaned on and wiped. It needs a finish that looks good up close, cleans easily and suits the room. Interior paint is not made to stand up to sun and rain, so on an outside wall it fades and wears quickly. Exterior paint can go inside, but you pay for weather protection the room does not need and have fewer finishes to choose from.

1. Interior emulsion: for inside walls and ceilings

Emulsion is the water-based paint that covers most walls inside a home. The main Jotun choices we sell are:

  • Fenomastic My Home Rich Matt: a deep, flat finish that hides small flaws in the wall. A favourite for bedrooms and drawing rooms.
  • Fenomastic My Home Smooth Silk: a soft sheen that is easier to wipe, good for lounges and corridors.
  • Fenomastic Hygiene Emulsion, matt or silk: made for rooms that are cleaned often, such as kitchens, bathrooms and children's rooms.
  • Durosan Interior Matt: the budget choice for large areas, rented homes and quick refreshes.

Matt or silk?

Matt looks calm and hides uneven plaster, but marks can be harder to clean. Silk reflects a little light, shows wall flaws more, and wipes more easily. Many homes use matt in bedrooms and living areas and silk or hygiene paint in kitchens and busy corridors.

2. Exterior weather paint: for outside walls

For the outside of the house, boundary walls and balconies, use a paint made for the weather:

  • Jotashield ColourLast, in matt or silk: made to keep its colour in strong sun.
  • Easyguard and Easyguard Plus: exterior paints for protecting walls against weather and dirt.

See exterior wall paint. For outside walls, preparation matters even more than inside. Loose, powdery paint and cracks must be dealt with first, or the new paint has nothing firm to hold on to.

3. Enamel: for doors, grills, windows and metal

Wood and metal move, get knocked and get handled every day, so they need a harder paint than a wall. Jotun Fenomastic Pure Colours Enamel comes in gloss, semi gloss and matt. Use it on wooden doors and frames, window grills, gates, railings and other metal work. Gloss is the toughest and easiest to wipe; matt gives a quieter, modern look. See enamel paint.

4. Primer: the coat most people skip

Primer is the first coat on a surface. It helps the finish paint grip, seals the wall so it does not soak up paint unevenly, and on new cement plaster it protects the finish from the alkali in the wall. Skipping primer is the most common reason we see paint peeling, blotchy colour or tins running out early. Jotun primers we stock include:

  • Jotashield Alkali Resistant Primer: for new exterior plaster.
  • Jotashield Penetrating Primer: for older exterior walls that feel chalky or powdery.
  • Fenomastic Emulsion Primer, Acrylic Emulsion Primer and PVA Primer: for interior walls before emulsion.

See all primers. If you are not sure which suits your wall, send us a photo and tell us whether it is new plaster or an old painted wall.

The right order of work

  • Clean the surface and scrape off anything loose.
  • Apply the right primer for the surface.
  • Fill cracks and rough patches with putty or filler, then sand smooth.
  • Apply two coats of the finish paint, letting the first dry properly before the second.

A quick guide: which wall, which paint

  • Bedroom, lounge, drawing room: interior emulsion, matt or silk.
  • Kitchen, bathroom, kids' room: Fenomastic Hygiene Emulsion.
  • Outside walls, boundary wall, balcony: Jotashield ColourLast or Easyguard.
  • Doors, frames, grills, gates: enamel.
  • Any new plaster or bare wall: primer first.
