Which Jotun primer does your wall need?

Primer is the coat nobody sees, but it decides how the finish looks and how long it lasts. It seals the wall, evens out how much paint the surface soaks up, and gives the top coat something to grip. Choosing the right one depends on whether the wall is inside or outside, and on its condition.

Exterior walls

  • Jotashield Alkali Resistant Primer: for new or fresh cement plaster outside. New plaster is alkaline, and this primer helps protect the paint on top from that.
  • Jotashield Penetrating Primer: for older, weak or powdery exterior surfaces. It soaks into the surface and binds it before you repaint.

Both are meant to go under Jotun exterior paints such as Jotashield ColourLast and Easyguard.

Interior walls

  • Fenomastic Emulsion Primer: the natural partner for Fenomastic interior paints on plastered walls.
  • Acrylic Emulsion Primer: a general water based primer for walls being painted with emulsion.
  • PVA Primer: a simpler, economical choice for everyday interior jobs.

Where primer fits in the system

The usual order is primer first, then putty or filler where needed to smooth cracks and dents, then two coats of your finish. On a wall that already has sound paint in good condition, you may only need to clean and sand before painting, but on new plaster, patched areas or chalky old paint, do not skip the primer. Always follow the drying times on the tin.

Do I really need a primer before Jotun paint?

On new plaster, repaired patches or old powdery paint, yes. Primer helps the finish stick, cover evenly and last longer. On sound, previously painted walls you may only need to clean and sand.

Which primer is used for new exterior plaster?

Jotashield Alkali Resistant Primer is made for new cement plaster on outside walls, under Jotun exterior paints.

What is the difference between PVA primer and emulsion primer?

Both are for interior walls. PVA Primer is a simpler, economical option, while Fenomastic Emulsion Primer and Acrylic Emulsion Primer are made to go under emulsion finishes.
