Jotun enamel for doors, grills and metal work

Enamel is a tougher paint than wall emulsion. It dries to a harder film that stands up to hands, knocks and weather, which is why it is used on doors, window frames, grills, gates, railings and furniture. We stock Jotun Fenomastic Pure Colours Enamel in three finishes.

Gloss, semi gloss or matt?

  • Fenomastic Pure Colours Enamel Gloss: a shiny, hard finish that is the easiest to wipe clean. Popular for main gates, grills and railings. Gloss shows surface flaws, so preparation matters.
  • Fenomastic Pure Colours Enamel Semi Gloss: a softer sheen that still cleans well. A balanced choice for interior doors and window frames.
  • Fenomastic Pure Colours Enamel Matt: a modern, low sheen look for doors and furniture, and it hides small marks better.

Preparing wood and metal

Enamel only performs as well as the surface under it:

  • Metal: remove rust and loose paint with a wire brush or sandpaper, clean off dust and grease, and use a suitable metal primer before enamel.
  • Wood: sand smooth, fill gaps, and prime bare wood before the finish.
  • Previously painted surfaces: sand lightly to take the shine off so the new coat grips.

Two coats of enamel usually give an even finish. Follow the drying time on the tin between coats. Enamel is solvent based, so use the thinner recommended on the label, such as Jotun Thinner No. 2 where specified, for thinning and cleaning brushes. Keep the room ventilated while you work.

Colours and pack sizes

Enamel can be mixed to your colour code. The final price depends on the colour and tint used, and mixed paint cannot be returned. Pack sizes are quarter, gallon and drum where available. For clear or natural wood looks instead of a solid colour, see Woodshield wood finishes.
