Putty or block filler: getting walls ready for paint

Paint shows every dent and crack underneath it, especially silk and gloss finishes. Filling and smoothing the wall first is what makes a paint job look professional. We stock two genuine Jotun products for this, and they do different jobs.

Jotun Stucco Putty

Stucco Putty is a smooth filler for interior walls. It is used to fill small cracks, nail holes and uneven patches, and to level a wall before emulsion. It is applied thin with a putty knife or trowel, left to dry and then sanded smooth. For a very flat finish, painters often apply two thin coats rather than one thick one.

Jotun Block Filler

Block Filler is for rough, open and porous surfaces such as concrete blocks and coarse masonry. It fills the pores so that the finish paint does not soak in unevenly, and it gives a more even base. It is a common choice where the wall has not been fully plastered smooth.

Where filler fits in the system

The usual order on a wall is:

• Clean the wall and remove loose paint or dust.
• Apply a suitable Jotun primer.
• Fill and level with putty or filler where needed, then sand.
• Finish with two coats of paint, for example from our interior wall paint range.

Always check the product label, as the exact order and drying times can vary by product and surface. Deep structural cracks or damp patches need their cause fixed first. Putty will not cure a leak.

Putty use depends heavily on how uneven the wall is, so it is hard to calculate exactly. Tell us the room size and send a photo, and we will suggest a sensible quantity. For the paint itself, our room calculator works out litres from wall size and coats.
