Woodshield stains and varnishes: which one do you need?

Woodshield is Jotun's range for finishing wood while keeping the grain visible. It splits two ways: stain or varnish, and interior or exterior. Getting both right is what makes the finish last.

Stain or varnish?

• Woodshield Stain: adds colour to the wood while letting the grain show through. Our stains are sold as a yellow base (Bs Yel on the label) and tinted to your chosen wood tone, such as walnut or teak style shades.
• Woodshield Varnish: a clear protective coat (Clr on the label) that keeps the natural colour of the wood, or goes over a stain to protect it.

Interior or exterior?

Interior versions are for doors, cupboards, furniture, stair railings and panelling inside the house. Exterior versions are made for wood that faces sun and rain, such as main doors, window frames, pergolas and outdoor furniture. Using an interior product outside usually leads to early fading and peeling.

Gloss or matt?

Gloss (Gl) gives a shiny, classic furniture look and wipes clean easily. Matt (Mt) gives a natural, modern look with less reflection. Our range:

How to apply

Sand the wood smooth along the grain and remove all dust. Old paint or damaged varnish should come off first. Apply stain for colour if wanted, then varnish in thin coats, lightly sanding between coats. Two or more coats are common, but follow the label for coats and drying times. Try the stain on a hidden piece first, as the final shade depends on the wood.

Colour, returns and pack sizes

Tinted stain depends on the colour and tint used for its final price, and mixed products cannot be returned. Clear varnish in unused condition follows our 7 day return rule. Pack sizes are quarter, gallon and drum where available.
